Pauliina Tukiainen Pianist

About

Praised for her warmth of tone and flexibility of phrasing, Pauliina Tukiainen’s passion for the art of Lied transcends the concert stage. Alongside her role as Lied Professor at Mozarteum University, she frequently gives masterclasses and features as a jury member of competitions.

Finnish pianist Pauliina Tukiainen has gained a reputation as a versatile musician and sought-after professor for Lied Interpretation.

Alongside her well established partnership with Finnish baritone Arttu Kataja, she has recently performed with singers including Iida Antola, Juliane Banse, Ingeborg Danz, Karine Deshayes, Mojca Erdmann, David Fischer, Silvia Hauer, Johannes Held, Henk Neven, Christoph Prégardien, Julian Prégardien, Andreas Schmidt, Marie Seidler and Christoph Strehl. Beyond her appearances at numerous festivals in her home country, she has performed at prestigious venues such as the Berlin State Opera, the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Tonhalle in Zurich, Oslo Konserthus and the Hugo Wolf Academy. She has also appeared at festivals including the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, Bodensee Festival, Festival Lied in Würzburg, Fundación Juan March in Madrid, SongEasel in London, and the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, as well as in South Africa, India, and Vietnam. Many of her concerts have been recorded by both German and international broadcasting companies.

Following her highly acclaimed debut CD ‘Mirrors’ - featuring works by Jean Sibelius and Kaija Saariaho - she recorded songs by Alban Berg, Claude Debussy, Robert Schumann, Richard Strauss, and Richard Wagner for Coviello Classics, also including a world premiere performance of Wolfgang Rihm’s Ophelia Sings. Her CD Serious Songs with baritone Arttu Kataja released on Alba Records was nominated “Album of the Year” by the Finnish Broadcasting Company in 2020. The duo’s recording of Schubert’s Winterreise was released by the same label in 2022.

In addition to her concert schedule, she is equally in demand as a lecturer for Lied for prestigious universities, masterclasses and workshops. She has taught Lied interpretation at both the Frankfurt am Main and Freiburg conservatoires, and has given masterclasses at the Royal College of Music in London, the Vienna Volksoper Opera Studio, Mahler Academy in Bolzano, ESMUC Barcelona, the Summer Academy of Mozarteum University Salzburg, Sibelius Academy, the Deutsche Liedakademie, and the Lied the Way Workshop.
She has served as a jury member for competitions such as Schubert und die Moderne in Graz, the Nadia and Lili Boulanger Competition in Paris, the Helsinki Lied Competition, the International Lied Duo Competition in Groningen, the Paula Salomon-Lindberg Lied Competition, and the Deutsche Musikwettbewerb. She enjoys a long-standing artistic collaboration with the Bonner Schumannfest, curating Art Song programmes while simultaneously creating a platform for emerging Lied Duos.

Pauliina Tukiainen studied piano in Finland and in Frankfurt am Main. During her Art Song studies with Hartmut Höll and Anne Le Bozec in Zurich and Karlsruhe, she received numerous prizes and scholarships. She further benefited from artistic guidance by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Ralf Gothoni, Thomas Hampson, Christoph Prégardien and Wolfgang Rihm.

She leads the Female Artist in Residence program at Mozarteum University Salzburg, where she has held a professorship for Lied Interpretation since 2017.
